"Grab your shields and prepare for battle!" "Prepare your shields, both large and small, and march out for battle!" (Is 21:5 TLB, Jer 46:3 NIV)
Definition of shield: defensive armor that protects or guards. In Scripture, shields are listed as the first line of defense against the enemy. The shield and buckler (a small shield) are usually listed before spears, arrows, and other weapons in the armory; for example: "Above all, taking the shield of faith...and the sword of the Spirit." (Eph 6:16 KJV); "Uzziah issued to them shields, spears, helmets, coats of mail, bows, and sling stones." (2Chron 26:14 TLB)
King David's shields were round: "The tower of David...on which are hung a thousand shields, all the round shields of the mighty men." (Sg 4:4 NASB) The circle represents God who is without beginning or end. The Bible tells us He is our shield: "The Lord himself is your shield . . ." (Deut 33:29 GNT)
The Bible says, "the shields of the earth belong to God." (Ps 47:9 NASB) The Lord has shields that are not visible: "and they rose up and cast Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill...in order to throw Him down the cliff. But passing through their midst, He went His way." (Lk 4:29,30 NASB); "They were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp." (Jn 10:39 NASB). Thus, "He shields all who take refuge in him." (2Sam 22:31b NIV)
